Athlon 64 3200+ System Repair Attempt

Today I worked on fixing this Athlon 64 3200+ system.

When I first got it, the original power supply flashed a blue light at me when I plugged it in, so I immediately unplugged it. I did not have another PSU at the time, so I left the system alone for a while.

Later on, I got some other parts in and actually ended up reusing the case for my main computer (the one from my other page).

Eventually I came back to this system and one night I wanted to check what CPU it had. I made the mistake of pulling the heatsink off without knowing that the mounting system of Socket 754 can sometimes pull the CPU out with it.

That is exactly what happened the processor came out stuck to the cooler. I didnt have proper tools at the time and ended up bending a few pins trying to remove it.

Instead of stopping there, I tried fixing the pins over the next weeks and months, which only made things worse until I eventually gave up.

Later I bought an Athlon 64 3300+ but didnt realize the ECS 755-A2 v1.0A motherboard needed a BIOS update to detect it. The system would not POST, only fans spinning endlessly.

Eventually I somehow managed to fix the original 3200+ and get it to fit back into the socket again.

But when I powered it on again nothing happened. No POST, no boot, just dead silence.

I recently got a Thermaltake 480W power supply and was hoping to use it here, but I am still not sure what the real issue is.

It could be the original PSU failure, CPU damage from earlier mistakes, or general motherboard failure.

My two main guesses are either that the Athlon 64 3200+ is dead, or that the ECS 755-A2 v1.0A motherboard has failed. I am leaning toward the motherboard, but I honestly dont know.

For now, the system is back in storage until I decide to revisit it.

My Part Choices

There is more parts I didnt specify in the first part of this blog update, Here are the drives I was going to add.

All of these are instances where I just had these parts laying around and decided they would be a good fit for this system.

The first thing is an optical drive, it is a Sony DRU-120c This is a pretty decent drive, it can burn dual layer DVDs, Normal DVD+Rs can be burned at 16x speeds. The CD speeds are also really good, it can burn CD-Rs at 48x speeds and CD-RWS at 32x speed

Now I will talk about the HDD,the HDD is a Western Digital WD5000AAKB (Caviar SE16) the capacity is 500GB this drive is PATA interface, Along with the Optical drive. The HDD spins at 7200 RPM This drive is pretty nice the cache is 16MB which is 2x the cache of their old drives.

The Last drive that would have been in this is a generic TEAC floppy drive. Nobody really cares about floppy drives anymore, they are pretty lame, but they still put together what would be a full system

The other video card choice is also just what I have laying around, This is an ATI Radeon 9250. It uses the RV280 graphics processor, the process size is 150 NM the card runs on the 8x AGP bus. It has 4 pixel shaders and 1 vertex shader, 4 TMUS, and 4 ROPS. a 64bit bus and 64MB of DDR memory. the card supports DirectX 8.1. The GPU clock is 275mhz and the memory clock is faster than the base 9200 series cards. I dont believe it is a great card, but it is the best AGP card I had on hand. i might look into overclocking it if possible. I do have an fx 5500 which is also not the best but it is in my dimension 4400 anyway.

And last, I think the power supply is the most exciting part of this build, the powersupply is a ThermalTake Total Watt Viewer power supply, it is 480 watts, it comes with a front panel watt viewer (hence the name) it also includes what I believe is a fan controller, one of my favorite parts about it is that it is xaser branded, which is really cool to me, and the orange and black design on the power supply. unfortunately I do not have that front panel accessory, I was given this power supply from a friend, he told me he has the front panel accessory somewhere but has not found it yet.

I must say I am quite bummed about this computer not working, I was very excited to pair the power supply with this system as the orange accents would of looked awesome. Oh well, I might consider buying a new motherboard and AGP video card to get this working. I would also have to purchase a new case.
